Decimo anniversario della Residenza KOUMARIA: INTERFACES
Dal 2009 il collettivo artistico Medea Electronique ha organizzato annualmente una dieci giorni di residenza sperimentale a Koumaria, vicino Sparta in Grecia (villaggio di Sellasia), concentrandosi sull’improvvisazione e sulle pratiche dei nuovi media. Gli artisti di tutto il mondo, ispirati da paesaggio greco, giungono a creare insieme un dialogo multiculturale incrociato che culmina in una presentazione collettiva sia localmente che ad Atene alla fine della residenza. I precedenti artisti in residenza hanno formato relazioni e nuove partnership artistiche. Per gli organizzatori la residenza serve come modello per future e creative collaborazioni.
La residenza Koumaria: Background
La residenza si svolge in un’azienda agricola biologica ai piedi del Monte Taigetos a Sparta. La base per la residenza, una casa moderna e confortevole, dispone di camere in stile dormitorio, ampie e confortevoli sale comuni (con caminetti e magnifiche viste sulle montagne e sui campi circostanti), due spazi primari per lo sviluppo e la pratica del progetto, terrazze, attico panoramico e una cucina grande e moderna. Le colline circostanti, le montagne, i villaggi, il mare non troppo lontano, insieme a una vasta distesa di cielo, stelle e panorami montuosi in continua evoluzione, offrono agli ospiti spazio e opportunità di lavoro creativo. I pasti sono consumati in comune, con enfasi data ai prodotti freschi e locali e alle ricette tradizionali. In questo ambiente gli artisti non solo hanno la possibilità di vivere e lavorare insieme interagendo con il paesaggio greco, ma anche di scambiare le loro esperienze riguardanti la vita e la cultura di tutti i giorni. Le scelte sono intraprese collettivamente, ma i residenti hanno tutto il tempo per lavorare, creare, esplorare i dintorni e avviare nuove collaborazioni artistiche.
Il tema del 2018: INTERFACES
Quest’anno si festeggia il decimo anniversario della residenza. La residenza è partner del progetto paneuropeo Interfaces, cofinanziato dal programma Creative Europe dell’Unione Europea (www.interfacesnetwork.eu/), quindi il tema della residenza di quest’anno è INTERFACES . Cos’è un’interfaccia? Quando uno strumento è un’interfaccia? In che modo la struttura di un’interfaccia determina la struttura dell’arte quand’essa viene utilizzata per produrre? Quando un’interprete è un’interfaccia? Un’intera performance può essere essa stessa un’interfaccia? Si esploreranno temi come questi. Si invitano quindi candidature da parte di artisti, compositori, designer e danzatori che progettano, concepiscono e/o impiegano nuove interfacce, o interfacce preesistenti, in modi innovativi, e artisti che sono stimolati dalla prospettiva di lavorare con nuove interfacce, o di diventarne una! Come sempre, Medea Electronique è impegnata nella documentazione di alta qualità della residenza e quindi coloro che sono interessati a creare secondo questa modalità sono invitati a presentare domanda. I residenti avranno l’opportunità di utilizzare le interfacce che sono utilizzate come parte del contenuto della app Soundwalk di Rhizomes III, creata in collaborazione con ZKM in Germania e il Centro Culturale Onassis di Atene, dedicato al paesaggio che circonda il sito di residenza.
Dato il tema, si cercano artisti entusiasti dell’idea di una creazione artistica collaborativa, basata su spirito e pratica improvvisativi. Siete invitati a venire alla residenza con una nuova interfaccia già costruita, oppure a lavorare progettando e creando durante la residenza (notate che in loco si dispone di attrezzature tecniche limitate, siamo nella Grecia rurale!). In alternativa potete essere interessati a utilizzare le interfacce in modi nuovi e creativi. Non vengono posti limiti a ciò che si può fare, si chiede solo di essere esperti nei media scelti e disposti a collaborare con gli altri nella realizzazione dei contenuti. Si presenteranno anche i risultati della residenza in una performance e in una presentazione multimediale a Sellasia (il villaggio locale) alla fine del soggiorno.
Vale la pena sottolineare che l’attenzione per Koumaria è posta sulla creazione artistica collettiva. Un individuo dovrebbe aspettarsi e desiderare, consistenti input da parte degli residenti condividendo i propri progetti. Mentre i risultati finali che vengono prodotti possono avere ciascuno un organizzatore primario, Koumaria non è il luogo per lo sviluppo e la presentazione di opere/contenuti solistici.

La vostra candidatura deve fare riferimento ai precedenti progetti e dimostrare come si vede la propria attività artistica in relazione alla gamma delle pratiche che hanno avuto luogo a Koumaria.
Sui residenti
Medea Electronique, essendo un collettivo d’arte eclettica, è interessato a persone di diversa estrazione culturale e artistica. I residenti del passato provenivano da diversi background artistici e da numerosi paesi. Nonostante siano state rappresentate differenti nazionalità ed etnie, la lingua comune della residenza è l’inglese (la fluidità non è necessaria ma è necessaria la capacità di interagire con altri artisti in inglese).
I membri di Medea Electronique saranno a disposizione per dare una guida generale ai contenuti in fase di sviluppo e partecipano pienamente allo sviluppo degli stessi. Essi saranno in grado di prestare la loro esperienza sui nuovi media, hanno grande conoscenza della zona, conoscono le precise esigenze dell’app e sono partner uguali con i residenti nella produzione artistica. In altre parole, la Residenza di Koumaria non è una scuola o un seminario per la produzione di nuovi media artistici; i residenti devono essere già esperti nei loro media scelti, capire l’uso delle tecnologie con cui interagiscono e venire con queste tecnologie o chiarire in anticipo con l’organizzazione cosa dovrà essere fornito. La residenza si svolge in una remota regione della Grecia (vedi i dettagli della residenza per ciò che significa e per la disponibilità dei materiali tecnologici).
INTERFACES
La residenza Koumaria 2018 è organizzata in collaborazione col Centro Culturale Onassis di Atene (OCC) nell’ambito del progetto INTERFACES, un progetto internazionale interdisciplinare che mira a portare nuova musica a una vasta gamma di nuovi pubblici. Con il supporto del programma Europa creativa dell’Unione europea, Interfaces riunisce nove diversi partner provenienti da Regno Unito, Germania, Francia, Cipro, Belgio, Romania, Austria e Grecia con l’obiettivo principale di esplorare modi innovativi di introduzione al lavoro musicale sperimentale contemporaneo e verso i musicisti e artisti del suono coinvolgendo nuovo pubblico di tutte le età.
Dettagli pratici della residenza: la residenza fornisce ospitalità con le seguenti modalità:
- trasporti da Atene alla residenza e ritorno
- vitto e alloggio durante il soggiorno
- i trasporti ai siti visitati rientrano nella residenza
L’alloggio è organizzato come segue:
- camere e bagni in condivisione
- la preparazione culinaria e al pulizia della casa durante il soggiorno vengono accordate ed effettuate a rotazione (organizzando quali compiti e in quali giorni le persone dovranno svolgere)
Accesso alla tecnologia:
- i residenti debbono portare il proprio equipaggiamento (strumentazione & computer, etc.)
- la residenza si trova in una regione remota della Grecia, con limitata possibilità di trovare materiale elettronico
- per questo motivo i residenti devono controllare in anticipo quale materiale sarà disponibile e cosa sia necessario portare
- in casa non c’è accesso a internet.
Spese quotidiane:
- ci sono poche spese per i residenti ma è meglio avere qualche soldo per i trasporti locali, il caffè ed altro
- calcolare approssimativamente 5-10 euro al giorno per spese accessorie.
Trasporti da e per Atene: - la residenza non fornisce trasporti e spostamenti
- i residenti ne saranno essi stessi responsabili

KOUMARIA TENTH ANNIVERSARY RESIDENCY: INTERFACES
Since 2009 the artist collective Medea Electronique has organized an annual 10-day experimental artist residency, Koumaria, near Sparta in Greece (the village of Sellasia), focusing on improvisation and new media practices. New-media artists from all over the world, inspired by the Greek natural landscape, come together to create a multicultural and cross-media ‘dialogue’ culminating in a collective presentation both locally and in Athens at the end of the residency. Past residents have formed lasting friendships and new artistic partnerships. For us, the residency serves as a model for future creative collaborations.
The Koumaria Residency – Background
The residency is held at an organic olive oil farm at the foot of Mount Taigetos in Sparta. The base for the residency, a modern and comfortable house, features dormitory-style bedrooms, large and comfortable common rooms (featuring fireplaces and magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and fields), two primary spaces for project development and practice, terraces, rooftop overlooks, and a large and modern kitchen. The surrounding hills, mountains, villages and the not too distant sea, coupled with a vast expanse of sky, stars, and ever-changing mountain vistas, afford the residents amble space and opportunity for creative work. Meals are taken communally, with an emphasis on fresh and local produce and traditional recipes. In this environment artists not only have the chance to live and work together interacting with the Greek landscape, but also to trade their experiences concerning everyday life and culture. Chores are undertaken collectively, but there is ample time for residents to work, create, explore the surroundings and enter into new artistic partnerships.
This Years Theme
This year we celebrate our tenth anniversary of the residency. We are also partners in the pan-European “Interfaces” Project which is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union (www.interfacesnetwork.eu/), and so the theme for this year’s residency is INTERFACES. What is an interface? When is an instrument an interface/an interface an instrument? How does the structure of an interface determine the structure of the art it is used to produce? When is a performer an interface? Can a whole performance be an interface? We will explore themes such as these. We therefore invite applications from artists, composers, designers and dancers who design, build and/or employ new interfaces or preexisting interfaces in innovative ways, and performers who are excited by the prospect of working with new interfaces, or becoming one! As always Medea Electronique is committed to the high-quality documentation of our residency, and so those interested in creating innovative documentation are also invited to apply. Residents will have the opportunity to employ the interfaces we use as part of the content for our Rhizomes III soundwalk app, created in association with ZKM in Germany and the Onassis Cultural Centre Athens, dedicated to the landscape surrounding the residency site.
Given the theme, we are looking for artists excited by the idea of collaborative artistic creation, grounded in an improvisatory spirit and practice. You are welcome to come to the residency with a new interface already built, or work on the design and creation during the residency (but note that we have limited technical/industrial equipment on site, we are in rural Greece!) Alternatively, you may be interested in employing interfaces in novel and creative ways. We place no limitations on what we may do, we only ask that you be expert in your chosen media and willing to work with others in realizing the content. We will also present the outputs of the residency in a performance and mixed-media presentation in Sellasia (the local village) at the end of our time there.
It is worth emphasizing that Koumaria’s focus is collective art creation. An individual should expect, and desire, substantive input from other residents, and be open to having their projects morph considerably during the course of the residency. While the final outputs we produce may each have a primary organiser behind them, Koumaria is not the place for the development and presentation of solo works/content.

About Residents
Medea Electronique, being an eclectic art collective, is interested in people from diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds. Past residents have come from a variety of artistic backgrounds, and from numerous countries. While assorted nationalities and ethnicities have been represented, the common language of the residency is English (although fluency is not necessary, an ability to interact with other artists in English is necessary).
Members of Medea Electronique will also be on hand to both guides the overall direction of the content being developed and fully participate in the content development. While these members will be able to lend their expertise in assorted new media practices and have great knowledge of the area, and the precise needs of the app, they are equal partners with the residents in the artistic production. In other words, the Koumaria Residency is not a school or workshop in new media art production run or taught by Medea Electronique, the residents are expected to be experienced in their chosen media, understand the use of the technologies they interact with, and come with these technologies or make it clear in advance what they will need to be supplied. The residency takes place in a remote region of Greece – see the residency details for what this means for availability of technology materials when there.
INTERFACES
The 2018 Koumaria residency is organised in partnership with the Onassis Cultural Centre Athens (OCC) in the framework of the INTERFACES project, an international, interdisciplinary project focusing on bringing new music to an extensive range of new audiences. With the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, Interfaces unites nine diverse partners from the UK, Germany, France, Cyprus, Belgium, Romania, Austria and Greece with main objective to explore innovative ways of introducing audiences to the work of cutting-edge musicians and sound artists and engage new audiences of all ages to the music of our time.
Practical Residency Details
The residency provides hospitality as follows:
• transportation from Athens to the residency and back.
• housing and food supplies during the course of the residency
• transportation to all the sites visited as part of the residency
Accommodation is organized as follows:
• rooms & bathrooms at the residency are shared
• cooking and cleaning the house during our stay is undertaken collectively according to a rota (organizing what tasks people are expected to do on what day)
Access to technology:
• residents should bring their own equipment (instruments & computers etc.)
• the residency takes place in a remote region of Greece, with limited ability to obtain tech/electronic materials while we are there – it is far easier to get in the area a bail of wire, or a piece of pipe then a semi-conductor or an obscure battery!
• for this reason, residents should check in advance concerning what materials will be available, and what they will need to bring.
• No Internet access at the House.
Living expenses:
• while there are few expenses the residents need to consider while at the residency, it is worth having some funds for trips to local cafes and the like.
• calculate approximately 5-10 euros a day for such incidentals.
Transportation to and from Athens:
• the residency does not provide transportation to and from Athens
• residents are responsible for arranging this themselves
