Gate 8 Workshop è un seminario per attori, artisti circensi, interpreti e ballerini di stile contemporaneo/urbano, professionisti e semi-professionisti, dai 17 anni in su che si svolgerà dal 2 al 6 gennaio 2022 nell’ex convento dell’Annunziata a Sestri Levante, in provincia di Genova.

I partecipanti avranno la possibilità di studiare e creare per cinque giorni insieme a Judith Sanchez e Roberto Olivan, come se facessero parte di una vera compagnia di danza partecipando ogni giorno a due lezioni di tecnica con i coreografi e a uno dei due laboratori di produzione per un totale di 7 ore di lavoro al giorno.

Gli esiti delle produzioni dei due laboratori saranno portati in scena in uno spettacolo che si terrà il 6 gennaio 2022 al Centro Benedetto Acquarone di Chiavari. Alla fine dello spettacolo i due coreografi selezioneranno due ballerini che riceveranno una borsa di studio di 1.000€ l’uno per sostenerli nel loro percorso artistico.

Si segnala che i partecipanti al Gate 8 hanno la possibilità di partecipare anche al Gate 8 Experimental Battle, un battle di danza sperimentale che si terrà il 4 gennaio 2022 a Chiavari in cui sono ammessi tutti gli stili. I partecipanti, selezionati e divisi in coppie dai giudici Judith Sanchez, Roberto Olivan e Sly, si sfideranno due contro due, accompagnati dal dj Matt One. La coppia vincente riceverà un premio di 200 euro.

Gate 8 Workshop significa ricerca e sperimentazione, connessione, scambio culturale, scoperta della propria autenticità come artista e come persona.

I seminari con Judith Sanchez e Roberto Olivan

ROBERTO OLIVAN
Roberto Olivan è un creativo aperto a tutte le possibilità, che mette tutto in discussione, costantemente inseguendo cioè che è già stabilito e ciò che è rivoluzionario.
Ama esporsi al rischio, continuando a cercare nuovi incontri tra i vecchi simboli scontati e una nuova logica emergente, utilizzata come meccanismo per trasgredire i limiti. Artista creativo internazionale, inizia la sua formazione all’Institut del Teatre di Barcellona e al P.A.R.T.S. di Bruxelles. La capitale belga segna una svolta nella sua carriera artistica; inizia la sua carriera di ballerino professionista con il corpo di ballo Rosas, sotto la regia di Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.
E’ stato sul palco sotto la direzione di rinomati direttori come Robert Wilson, Tom Jansen e Josse de Pauw.
Al momento Roberto dirige la compagnia R.O.P.A. – Roberto Olivan Performing Arts, formata a Bruxelles nel 2001; è inoltre direttore artistico e fondatore del Festival Deltebre Dansa, evento internazionale che si svolge una volta all’anno dal 2004.

Workshop L’istinto come fonte del movimento con Roberto Olivan

Roberto Olivan forgia la danza dalla fisicalità, la potenza corporea e la tecnica, mettendo il corpo in situazioni estreme, con lo scopo di far perdere la paura di muoversi in un determinato contesto. Il laboratorio è incentrato soprattutto sulla generazione di materiale per la danza dai nostri istinti animali e dalla nostra creatività; inoltre, rafforza la confidenza del gruppo costruendo conclusioni sicure anche in situazioni difficili.
Diventa importante muoversi in modo efficiente, ma ci sono anche altri scopi importanti: lavorare con la gravità e con la coscienza delle sensazioni interne, come il respiro, e la visualizzazione dell’energia che viene rilasciata dal movimento. Questa coscienza del corpo unifica la mente con la struttura fisica, in relazione alle energie spaziali, gli altri e il sé. In questo senso, il corpo diventa un mezzo di proiezione del flusso fisico e emotivo. La forza delle immagini mentali, come le linee e le strutture intorno al corpo e al suo interno, definiscono le funzionalità del corpo e ci aiutano a capirle.
Avendo imparato ed utilizzato molte tecniche di danza, Olivan ha scoperto le limitazioni della tecnica nell’espressione artistica. Accetta la necessità di queste tecniche convenzionali, ma si rende conto che utilizzare esclusivamente queste limita la libertà della danza e dei ballerini. Ed è per questo che Olivan ha intrapreso la sua ricerca della libertà, creando forme insolite e affinando la sua tecnica per sviluppare un linguaggio unico che viene riconosciuto come il suo stile, un linguaggio incentrato sulla velocità e la precisione.

JUDITH SANCHEZ RUIZ
Judith Sánchez Ruiz inizia i suoi studi di danza all’età di undici anni alla Scuola Nazionale delle Arti di Havana, Cuba. Lavora come coreografa, ballerina e insegnante a New York tra il 1999 e il 2011, per poi trasferirsi a Berlino. Ha interpretato il lavoro di rinomati coreografi come, tra altri, Sasha Waltz & Guest, (2011-2014); Deborah Hay, (2012); Trisha Brown Dance Company, (2006-2009); Jeremy Nelson & Luis Malvacias (2001-2002); DD Dorvillier, (2002, 2019); David Zambrano, (1997), Mal Pelo Company, (1997-1999); e DanzAbierta Company, (1991-1996). Ha fondato la sua compagnia di danza, JSR Company, e lavora a Berlino e in ambito internazionale come coreografa, ballerina e insegnante.
Nel 2009 Sanchez è stata selezionata dalla Cuban Artists Fund (CAF) per partecipare ad un programma di scambio culturale tra gli Stati Uniti e il Cuba. E’ stata nominata tra le “Mujeres Destacadas (Donne Eccezionali) 2008” da El DIARIO, giornale di New York in lingua spagnola, e selezionata da Dance Magazine come una dei 25 ballerini da tenere d’occhio negli Stati Uniti nel 2010.
Più recentemente, ha lavorato come professore al HZT – Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz e professore in visita / Weißensee Kunsthochschule al master artistico “Strategie spaziali” tra diversi istituti in Europa, Asia e gli Stati Uniti. Sta lavorando attualmente alla stesura del suo libro sull’improvvisazione e la pratica dell’esecuzione, raccogliendo disegni, processi, possibili spartiti e metodologie per la sua ricerca. Nel 2017 le è stata commissionata una residenza al Choreographisches Centrum Heidelberg in Projekt der TANZAllianz, Heidelberg, Germany. Nel 2020 le è stata conferita la borsa di studio Dis-TANZ Solo del Dachverband Tanz Deutschland.

Spartito e processo: Strategie per l’improvvisazione nella coreografia, per permettere al cervello di respirare. Per aprire nuovi modi di mettere in ballo l’istinto e la curiosità, accettando ciò che non conosci. Ciò che non conosci potrebbe comprendere tu stesso, chi sei, e cosa ti sta succedendo. Emerge l’incosciente. Le tue frustrazioni emergono alla luce del giorno, le tue emozioni più profonde si rivelano.
Entrambi possono essere considerati sia scoperta che memoria. Tutto si evolve in modo naturale, creando un’esperienza profonda, che può essere scomoda a volte, ma è anche una benedizione. Il corpo sano impara ad andare oltre, a trovare il suo percorso artistico.
«Come interprete con più di 20 anni di esperienza, continuo a cercare costantemente le fonti della creatività e la ricerca; dai primi anni della mia formazione, la scoperta di chi sono io, per poter sopravvivere nelle circostanze politiche e esistenziali in cui nacqui. Ho imparato a seguire ed alimentare il mio intelletto con ferocia».

Gate 8 Workshop. Workshop | Performance Project

Gate 8 Workshop is a seminar for actors, circus artists, performers, semi-professional or professional contemporary/urban dancers aged 17 and over. Participants will have the opportunity to study and create for five days with Judith Sanchez and Roberto Olivan as if they were in a real dance company with the opportunity to perform on stage the 6/01/2022.

At the end of the performances, on January 6th, the two choreographers will choose two dancers who will receive a scholarship of 1.000€ each to help them in their artistic path.

G8W is research and experimentation, connection, cultural exchange, the discovery of one’s own authenticity as an artist and a person.

ROBERTO OLIVAN:
Olivan is an open and questioning creator who constantly pursuits between the established and the insurgent.
His love for risks makes him create continuous re-encounters between the old and assumed signs with the emergence of a new logic that is used as a mechanism to transgress the limits. This international creator started his training at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona and P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels.
The Belgian capital was the key point in the strengthening of his artistic career. He took his first steps as a professional dancer at Rosas dance company, directed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.
He also performed under the direction of renowned directors such as Robert Wilson, Tom Jansen and Josse de Pauw.
Currently, Roberto is the director of the dance company R.O.P.A. – Roberto Olivan Performing Arts.
The company was created in Brussels in 2001. He also is the artistic director and founder of the Festival Deltebre Dansa, an international event that has taken place annually since 2004.

Workshop: Instinct as a source of movement |Roberto Olivan
Roberto Olivan forges dance from physicality, body power and technique, taking the body to ex-treme situations. His goal is to encourage loosing fear of moving in a specific context. The workshop is especially focused on generating dance material from our animal instincts and our own creativity.
Moreover, it strengthens group confidence by building safe conclusions from difficult situations.
Moving efficiently becomes an important issue, but there are other important purposes too. Working with gravity, the consciousness of inner sensations, such as breathing, and the visualisation of energy released by movement. This consciousness of body unites mind and physical structure relating it to spatial energies, to others and to oneself. In this sense, the body becomes a tool of projection for the physical and emotional flow. The force of mental images, such as lines and structures around and in the body, are used to define and help us better understand the body’s functionality.
After learning and using many kinds of dance techniques, Olivan discovered their limitations for artistic expression. Whilst accepting the necessity for these conventional techniques, he knows that using them exclusively curtails freedom in dance and in the performers. This is why Olivan is embarked on a constant quest for the freedom that creates singular forms, refining his technique in order to develop a unique language that can be recognised as his own style, a language focused on speed and precision.

JUDITH SANCHEZ RUIZ:
Judith Sánchez Ruz began her dance studies at the age of eleven at the National School of Arts in Ciudad de la Habana, Cuba. The Berlin-based choreographer, performer and teacher worked in New York City from 1999 to 2011, before relocating to Berlin. She has performed the works by notable choreographers Sasha Waltz & Guest, (2011-2014); Deborah Hay, (2012); Trisha Brown Dance Company, (2006-2009); Jeremy Nelson & Luis Malvacias (2001-2002); DD Dorvillier, (2002, 2019); David Zambrano, (1997), Mal Pelo Company, (1997-1999); and DanzAbierta Company, (1991-1996), among others.
She is the founder of her company JSR Company and works internationally and in Berlin as a choreographer, performer, and teacher.
In 2009 Ms. Sanchez was selected as a participant in the cultural exchange program between the United States and Cuba by the Cuban Artists Fund (CAF).
She was awarded “Mujeres Destacadas (Outstanding Women) 2008” by the Spanish newspaper in New York, “El DIARIO” and selected by Dance Magazine as one of the 25 Dancers to Watch in 2010 in the United States.
Most recently she has been working as a Professor at HZT – Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz and a Visiting Professorship / Weißensee Kunsthochschule, Master Arts Programme “Spatial Strategies, among many other institutions in Europe, Asia and the US. Currently, she is focusing on writing a book about Improvisation and Performance Practices, with this research she gathers drawings, processes, possible scores, and methodologies. In 2017 she was awarded a residency at Choreographisches Centrum Heidelberg in Projekt der TANZAllianz,, Heidelberg, Germany. In 2020 she was awarded the Dis-TANZ Solo grant from Dachverband Tanz Deutschland.

Score and Process: Strategies to Choreography Improvisation allows the brain to breathe. It opens new ways to bring instinct and curiosity into the equation, and accept the unknown. The unknown can also Include yourself, who you are, what is happening to you, the unconsciousness comes forward. Frustrations are brought to light and the most deep emotions emerge, both can be listed as a discovery and a mirror. It all evolves naturally, creating a profound experience. It is uncomfortable at times, but also a blessing. It is when a healthy body learns to go beyond and find the artistic path.
«As a performer, with more than 20 years experience, I am constantly looking for sources of creativity and research. Since the early years of formation, the discovery of who I am, as a way of survival into the political, existential circumstances I was born with. I have learned how to follow and feed my intellect with the ferocity».
